When I made this session with Chad I wondered what it is that makes us who we are. Is it the person that we never show because we don`t feel comfortable with or is it a projection of the person that others want us to be. Here is what he says about this:

I’ve forever hidden behind my “Faking the real me…” mantra, as a way to protect myself and cover my vulnerabilities with a extravagant hair, suggestive clothing and bronzer. Whatever my motivation to pose for these shots – vanity or bright-light allure — I’ve realized it’s just me. As I am. How I should be. Contently real. Me.

Chad

“In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals. The images depict a world that is without beginning or end, here or there, past or present.”
—Gregory Colbert, Creator of Ashes and Snow

The connection

Gregory Colbert’s Ashes and Snow is an ongoing project that weaves together photographic works, 35mm films, art installations and a novel in letters. With profound patience and an enduring commitment to the expressive and artistic nature of animals, he has captured extraordinary interactions between humans and animals.

His 21st-century bestiary includes totemic species from around the world. Since he began creating his singular work of Ashes and Snow in 1992, Colbert has undertaken photographic and filming expeditions to locations such as India, Egypt, Burma, Tonga, Sri Lanka, Namibia, Kenya, Antarctica, the Azores, and Borneo.

Vision

Ashes and Snow is photographer Gregory Colbert’s extraordinary project that illuminates his vision of a world in which animals peacefully coexist with humans. It is an ongoing project that weaves together photographic works, a film, art installations and a novel in letters.

Ashes and Snow attempts to lift the natural and artificial barriers between humans and other species, dissolving the distance that exists between them. The project aims to reawaken in us an understanding of our shared animal nature. This insight will affect the way we behave in our environment and help us find the empathy and wisdom to interact peacefully in a world that was once one.

The Nomadic Museum is the permanent home of Ashes and Snow, a traveling exhibition of Colbert’s work. Proceeds from the Nomadic Museum fund the charitable activities of Flying Elephants Foundation.
